π₯ How Noise Damages Health
The World Health Organisation calls noise pollution the second largest environmental health risk in Western Europe after air pollution. Yet it remains largely invisible.
π’
30β40 dB β Quiet
Library, quiet bedroom
No health effects. Ideal for sleep and concentration.
π‘
50β60 dB β Moderate
Normal conversation, light traffic
Sleep may be disturbed if sustained at night. Minor annoyance.
π
65β70 dB β Loud
Heavy traffic, busy restaurant
WHO night limit is 40 dB. 65 dB sustained doubles cardiovascular risk.
π΄
75β85 dB β Very Loud
Lawnmower, busy road
Prolonged exposure causes permanent hearing damage. High stress hormone levels.
π¨
90β110 dB β Dangerous
Power tools, concerts, clubs
Hearing damage begins within minutes. Tinnitus risk. Legal limits apply in workplaces.

β How to Take Action Against Noise Pollution
Step 1 β Document Everything
Keep a noise diary β dates, times, duration, estimated loudness. Use this tool to log reports. The more entries you have, the stronger your case.
Step 2 β Report to Your Local Council
Ireland: Contact your Local Authority's Environment department. UK: Contact Environmental Health at your Local Council. USA: Contact your city's Department of Environmental Protection. Most councils have legal obligations to investigate persistent noise complaints.
Step 3 β Organise with Neighbours
Multiple complaints from different addresses are far more powerful than one complaint. Share this tool with neighbours so they can file their own reports. Collective evidence is harder for authorities to ignore.
Step 4 β Escalate if Needed
If the council does not act: Ireland β Environmental Protection Agency (epa.ie). UK β Environmental Protection Act 1990 allows courts to issue noise abatement orders. Use a solicitor's letter as a last resort β councils often act when legal action is threatened.
